About Fria: Timeline

1976 Incorporated as the "citizen watchdog" recommended by the Moreland Commission investigating nursing home scandals.
1977 Founded a coalition of statewide organizations (now called the Long Term Care Community Coalition) to expand the network of organizational advocates concerned with nursing home policies.
1982 Published first comprehensive consumer guide describing long term care options and issues.
1983 Established free Telephone Hotline.
1984 Published report on racial discrimination in nursing home admissions that led to stronger state enforcement of civil rights laws.
1985 With Gray Panthers, went undercover for New York State Special Prosecutor to expose illegal, under-the-table payments to gain admission to nursing homes.
1989 Sued by a nursing home after FRIA inspired a State midnight inspection.  FRIA prevailed, assisted by pro bono lawyers, and the violations and fine against the nursing home were sustained while the confidentiality of the whistle blower nursing staff was protected.
1991 Fifth edition of consumer guide, Eldercare in the 90s, picked as Best Bet by New York Magazine.
1992 Published study of conditions in New York City adult homes that showed a lack of effective public oversight.
1995 Published report suggesting effective responses to cultural diversity in New York City nursing homes.
1998 Convened an Informational Forum on nursing home Culture Change after creating a coalition of consumers, providers and unions interested in care improvement.
2000 Identified New York City nursing homes that have 'conscience' policies that may cause them to refuse to follow residents' end-of-life treatment decisions.
2003 Successfully challenged the State to enforce protections against illegal evictions of elderly residents.
2005 Worked to require nursing homes to provide necessary medications despite problems with Medicare Part D.
2006 Convened conference to educate consumers on how to pursue nursing home complaints with the NYS Department of Health and the NYS Attorney General.
2006 Thirty year anniversary!
2008 Published new Family Council Manual and Toolkit: A Guide to Creating and Sustaining Effective Nursing Home Family Councils.
2008 Held conference on "Addressing the Needs of Nursing Home Residents in Psychological Distress: Strengthening Family/Nursing Home Partnerships." Attended by caregivers and professionals
