Family Council Leadership Meeting In April, fifteen family council leaders from 11 different nursing homes in 6 counties joined the FRIA staff at our quarterly Family Council Leadership Meeting.
People from newly formed Councils heard about work being done by established groups and everyone shared challenges they face and successes they have won. Marty Olivieri, President of St. Cabrini Family Council in Dobbs Ferry reported that their attendance has increased dramatically, and that 100 people or more now regularly attend their meetings. Their Council successfully negotiated with the facility's administration and implemented several programs that have improved resident care. Suggestions of how councils can replicate St. Cabrini's success include focusing their advocacy efforts on one or two very specific issues and doing the necessary follow-up work to ensure that concrete changes are implemented. Once a Council wins an advocacy success, they can publicize that success to attract new members. FRIA is planning our next Family Council Leadership Meeting in July.
