Friends & Relatives of Institutionalized Aged is an independent, non-profit organization that for thirty years has been working to improve long term care in New York state. Its helpline operates in English and Spanish Mondays - Friday from 10 to 5. It is designed to serve people in New York City and its surrounding counties.

FRIA's free telephone Helpline 212-732-4455, answers questions about placement, choosing the right home, Medicaid funding, and alternatives, especially home care. FRIA's trained counselors help families handle the placement process from the hospital or community and help them select the right home for their relatives.

FRIA also helps with problems that occur in a nursing home. Helpline counselors answer questions about what the law requires, how to spot common problems such as overmedication or pressure sores. They teach concerned relatives to be effective care monitors and advocates to make sure residents get good care.

Free publications are also available for relatives of nursing home residents: There are pamphlets on Comprehensive Care Planning, Removing Restraints, Food, Mobility, Overmedication, Pressure Sores and Meeting Language and Cultural Needs. Some are available in English and Spanish and the last also in
